Virtual Online Trading Day a Huge success

The Institute for Virtual Enterprise hosted its semi-annual Online Trading Day in conjunction with Kingsborough Community College on November 12, 2008. Spanning over 9 time zones, the event connected 37 college, high school, and ESL virtual enterprises from Austria, New York, Ohio, Arizona, and California. The premise of the event was to give participating students and virtual firms an opportunity to present their enterprises, products and services via GotoMeeting and video conferencing to each other. The result was a boost in online sales in the Virtual Economy through students' spending and use of their virtual credit cards The activity surpassed previous trading days with students completing 1137 transactions with a total sales volume of $274,303.88 over the course of the day.

As a follow-up event, an additional 15 virtual enterprises took their companies public and kicked-off the 4th iteration of the CUNY IVE Stock Market Collaborative The current economic situation highlights the importance to teach our students about how the Stock Market works (or actually does not work) and gives them an opportunity to explore the stock market in a safe learning environment and to "test" certain investment strategies. As Dr. Schulman, director of IVE, pointed out during his opening remarks, "As educators we must also foster a strong attitude towards entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship education since this is and will be the most viable option in order to (re)grow the economy and create those jobs that are currently being lost."
