Career Exploration in a Weak Economy

On Wednesday, November 12, 2008 students from five CUNY campuses met at Hunter College to discussed ways of exploring one's personal career interests and how to land a great job after graduation. The CUNY/IVE Leadership Roundtable was hosted by IVE in conjunction with Chi Alpha Epsilon SEEK Honor Society at Hunter College.

The featured speaker of the evening was Harvard alumnus and aspiring attorney Robert Gee. Mr. Gee discussed his career choices and what it takes to explore and pursue one's personal and professional interests during college. He highlighted the importance of networking within and outside the college, as well as how students should take advantage of the services that their career offices provide (i.e. resume and interview workshops). In addition, he pointed out that resumes and cover letters serve an important function during the job application process, since these documents will determine whether one receives an invitation to a job interview or not. During the discussion, IVE director Dr. Stuart Schulman suggested that students should see the interview as a conversation between equals. Both the employer and the interviewer have something to offer.

The roundtable concluded with students' exchange of information about their projects, goals and activities. The session offered valuable networking opportunities for all attendees who agreed to create a professional online resume using the business networking site www.linkedin.com . It is IVE's goal to help students build a strong network while attending college and help them to get those jobs for which they are aspiring.
