Council Member Gale Brewer Speaks About NYC Funding Opportunities

Council Member Gale A. Brewer Gale A. Brewer her Chief of Staff Shula Warren facilitated CUNY/IVE's third Leadership Roundtable, April 22, 2009 at CUNY Central Office of Student Affairs. Present were thirteen students from eight CUNY campuses. Council Member Brewer spoke about the city council and their role in aiding New York City's communities, specifically non-profit organizations and the process of obtaining city funds.

Council Member Brewer has represented the Upper West Side and Clinton in the New York City Council since 2002. Brewer chairs the Committee on Technology in Government, where she works to make better use of technology to save money, improve City services, and bring residents, businesses and non-profits closer to government and their communities. In addition, she co-chairs the Manhattan Delegation and sits on the Council's Steering Committee and the Budget Negotiating Team.

Council Member Brewer started the discussion by speaking about the role of the City Council and how students could work with other organizations to get their projects funded. Additionally, she advised students on how to market their projects. Ms. Warren discussed the process of awarding funds through the Manhattan Delegation where, similar to CUNY IVE's Final Competitive Event, organizations have three minutes to present their projects to Council Members and their staff. Council Member Brewer also encouraged students to engage their representatives and not to work in "silos", but through collaborative work with various constituencies and stakeholders.

Participants had an opportunity to ask questions of the Council Member and Chief of Staff. They also engaged in discussion and networked with one another.
