  CUNY Students Discuss Professional Social Networking

The CUNY / IVE Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship Program held its final Fall 2009 Leadership Roundtable on Tuesday November 17, 2009. The roundtable, titled “Professional Social Networking”, took place at Hunter College in the President’s Conference Room. The roundtable consisted of student representatives from various CUNY campuses and several CUNY staff members. The discussion was led by Program Director Christoph Winkler, Technology Director Edgar Troudt, and featured guest Gabriel Meister, who is a partner at the New York office of the law firm of Morrison and Foerster LLP. The main focus of the roundtable was social networking, specifically, how to use social networking in a professional manner. Students were taught how to use the Internet not only for personal use but to develop connections with the corporate world.

Christoph Winkler began the discussion by emphasizing how important it is to use social networking outlets in a professional manner. Currently, many students use the Internet and have a profile on a website such as Facebook , Twitter etc. Personal information is spread throughout the Internet and available for practically anyone to see. When applying for jobs, employers may conduct an internet search of the prospective candidate. Therefore using social networking for professional purposes becomes increasingly important and students need to be able to separate private from professional uses. Students who are developing themselves for entry into the business world should avoid making their personal profiles (e.g. Facebook ) publicly accessible, and establishing professional “public” profiles through professional networking sites such as LinkedIn. Winkler said “if you are planning to apply to a job, post something that is relevant to your job search and that will help you establish yourself as a professional with a certain set of interests and skills”. Troudt suggested that students should Google themselves regularly in order to make sure nothing disadvantageous (e.g. pictures, comments, etc.) to your job application is publicly accessible online. When applying for jobs, it is important to have a “clean file” because companies will investigate their potential employees in the virtual world.

Furthermore, Meister explained that social networking in general is very important for building connections and branching out. He encouraged students to further engage in business networking sites such as LinkedIn.com . In addition, Meister gave an overview of the legal issues involved when using a social network, especially with regards to content ownership and terms of use.

Students continued the conversation and networked with each other at the conclusion of the roundtable.
