  Enhancing Your Elevator Presentation

On May 11, 2010, the CUNY / IVE Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship Program hosted its third IVE Roundtable of the spring 2010 semester. The Roundtable, titled “Show Me the Money: Successful Elevator Presentations”, focused on developing and enhancing elevator presentations, which are brief pitches of a project or business idea to potential stakeholders (funders, investors, members, etc.). The interactive discussion was lead by Ms. Marisol del Valle, Executive Assistant at ABC Family and Mr. Christoph Winkler, Associate Director of IVE. During the course of the evening, Ms. del Valle presented different approaches and tactics for elevator presentations and stressed the importance of altering and tailoring elevator pitches to the respective target audiences, ranging from investors to the general public. She also emphasized conducting research beforehand about these stakeholders of interest in order to be able to incorporate a “hook, personal link, or attention getter” into the pitch. Mr. Winkler emphasized that given the time restraint associated with this type of presentation, one needs to integrate only the most relevant information of one’s idea to a potential investor. Also present were Dr. Stuart Schulman, Director of the Center of Economic and Workforce Development and Dean Billy Katz of Continuing Education at Kingsborough Community College, who encouraged the students to use daily interactions with each other to strengthen their interpersonal skills and, as a result, enhance their presentation skills.
