IVE and IBM Kick-Off Partnership to Support CUNY Student Entrepreneurs

On February 4, 2011 the CUNY Institute for Virtual Enterprise held their 9th annual Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship Program Kick-Off. The event, which took place at Baruch College’s Field Center for Entrepreneurship, gave over 70 students from almost every CUNY campus an opportunity to learn more about how the Program can help them to become successful leaders and entrepreneurs. Dr. Christoph Winkler, Associate Director for the CUNY Institute for Virtual Enterprise, led the students through the morning by introducing both Program and a series of successful IVE graduates who went on to making their projects and business ideas a reality. Dr. Christopher Rosa, University Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and a strong supporter for the CUNY IVE Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship Program, highlighted the significance of student leadership as an important ingredient to a prosperous and smarter future.

Dr. Rosa was followed by Mr. Rolando Franco, IBM Executive IT Architect and University Ambassador to CUNY who announced that "IBM is excited to partner with the CUNY Institute for Virtual Enterprise Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship program to help students develop the business and technology skills required to be competitive in tomorrow’s workforce. IBM's vision of Smarter Cities and a Smarter Planet requires leadership and innovation, hallmarks of both IBM and CUNY. Through our collaboration with CUNY, we hope to empower students across the University to envision and help create that future."

IVE is proud to partner with IBM this semester and introduced the concepts of IBM’s Smarter Cities as well as Mayor Bloomberg’s PlaNYC as organizing frameworks for this year’s projects. Mr. Kevin Faughnan, Director of the IBM Academic Initiative introduced this general framework and emphasized that “selecting a project related to the needs of NYC which leverages a student’s entrepreneurial drive is a win for the students, the university, the city, and for IBM. IBM is pleased to help foster student teamwork and provide hands-on access to resources required to develop real-world projects, which capitalize on the latest data management, web, and analytics tools. The skills built through this endeavor will certainly help support a Smarter NYC."

The Kick-off event was a huge success as students gained valuable information about entrepreneurship and how the upcoming Program milestones will help them to reach the finish line in June at the Final Competitive Event.
