Students Explore The Business Value in Social Networks

On March 15, 2011 the CUNY Institute for Virtual Enterprise held their 2nd Roundtable of the 9th annual Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship Program. The event, which took place at Baruch College’s Field Center for Entrepreneurship, was CUNY IVE’s first hybrid roundtable, giving students an opportunity to experience the presentation both on-site and via the web using IBM’s Lotus Sametime Unyte meeting software. Our featured speakers and discussion leaders were Bilal Jaffery, (Worldwide Social Media & Competitive Marketing Leader, IBM ISV & Developer Relations) teleconferencing from Canada and Daryl Pereira (Web and Social Media Manager, IBM ISV & Developer Relations) teleconferencing from San Francisco. The presenters shared with the students their expert view about how social networks within the workplace can make their business more efficient and themselves more knowledgeable while providing information on how a social business breaks down barriers between prospects, their customers and its extended ecosystem. Mr. Pereira summed up the evening on the IBM section of CUNY IVE’s Ning site when he stated, “Bottom line is that social media is transforming the way we do business: we are realizing massive efficiencies and humanizing corporations by providing employees the tools and knowledge to develop deeper relationships with each other and the extended ecosystem. Gone are the days when communications from a brand only came through the marketing and communications department.” After the presentation students attending in person and online had a chance to ask questions to the presenters about how the principles of social networking will be able to help their own business ideas and projects. Mr. Jaffery and Mr. Pereira also announced that they will continue to be available to help the students on CUNY IVE’s Online Mentor Lounge. IVE would like to thank our featured speakers for their insightful presentation and ongoing support of our students.
