IVE Students Compete for Seats at the Upcoming IBM SmartCamp in NYC

On Wednesday June 1st, 2011 the CUNY IVE Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship Program held its 9th Annual Final Competitive Event at the IBM Building on 590 Madison Avenue in New York City. The finals mark the culmination of the first phase of the Leadership Program, which was kicked-off in February and guided the students through a series of program milestones, and supporting roundtables and webinars. Over the course of the semester, IVE engaged almost 200 CUNY students on its program social networking platform This year’s 26 finalists, representing campuses throughout CUNY, presented their project and business ideas to a panel of judges to compete for seats to shadow this year’s IBM SmartCamp (NYC, June 28), which provides selected startups access to world-class advisors plus a direct route to seed and venture capital.. The three-minute presentations were followed by an intense questioning by the judging panel, which was comprised of Dan Bailey, IBM Executive IT Architect, Corporate Technology; Elischia Fludd, EOTO World; Demond Mullins, CUNY Graduate Center; Stacy Pschenica, IBM developerWorks Marketing, ISV & Developer Relations; Mike Svinte, IBM Vice President, Smarter Cities and Healthcare. The diversity of the projects, which incorporated IBM’s Smarter Cities theme, reflected the range of passions and interests of the participating CUNY students; ranging from socially conscious enterprises to technology-based start-ups. After much deliberation, the judges announced the following winners:

1st Place Winner: Young Governors
Team Members: Delia Kim of Baruch College

2nd Place Winner: Gender Based Violence Prevention Program
Team Members: Santiago Perez, Peter Oduk, Peninah Ayoti, Erin Coughlan, Crystal Scialla, Marie Mendy, and Kassidy Loy of Baruch College

3th Place Winner: Cosiety
Team Members: Humayun Rashid, Emilio Estevez, and Kimberly Williams of Baruch College

2 additional SmartCamp seats have been awarded to Cashin and Scoocle

With the conclusion of the first phase of this year’s program, all finalists have been invited to apply for IVE's Summer Incubator Program, which will competitively award student stipends and one-on-one mentoring to help take their projects to the next level.
