IVE Finalists Enter Summer Incubator Program

On Wednesday June 28, 2011 the winners of the 9th Cycle of the CUNY IVE Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship Program had the opportunity to attend the IBM SmartCamp New York at Baruch College, CUNY. This global competition for startup companies provided the participants of our program a firsthand glimpse of how an aggressive business plan and innovative technology could further their own business projects and ideas. In addition to all the useful information they received at the SmartCamp, many of our members networked and discussed their own projects with the various mentors including venture capitalists, academics and business leaders that were all in attendance that day.

Over the course of the spring 2011 semester, each of the CUNY IVE team members identified a project or business idea and moved towards the development of a solid business concept with the resources provided by IVE and IBM. The diversity of the projects, which incorporated IBM’s Smarter Cities theme reflected the range of passions and interests of the participating CUNY students; from socially conscious enterprises to technology-based start-ups.

The five project winners that attended the SmartCamp, as well as four additional teams from the 9th Cycle of the CUNY IVE Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship Program were also given the opportunity to participate in the 2011 Summer Incubator Program. This program components, pairs each team with an IBM mentor, who will be working with them to help develop a solid business plan that is competitive and will make it possible for them to secure the funds needed to get their business off the ground. Additionally, due to IBMs generous and tremendous support, IVE will be providing all projects with a stipend to assist in the further development of their business plans and help them to enter the Baruch Business Plan Competition in the spring of 2012.
